Mass Effect

As long as I'm praising scores to video games I might as well include Mass Effect.

The game was pretty neat, but the two noteworthy elements were the production design (which is drawn from early 80's sci-fi concepts) and the music.

The score is heavily influenced by 80's classics like Blade Runner, Dune, and TRON. It adds a surreal quality to the game and is very atmospheric and moody on its own.

  1. Nice. Haven't listened to the entire thing yet, but you've made another good pick.

  3. Is it just me or does it sound a little like Dune in places?

  4. Oh, there's lots of stuff in there.

A few tracks borrow from The Thing. There are influences from Christine and Escape From New York, and maybe a slight bit from Big Trouble In Little China.

There's a heavy Vangelis influence (Blade Runner is all over the place), and to a lesser extent, Tangerine Dream.

It's weird, but some of this stuff sounds like the Daft Punk music that's been released for TRON Legacy. Go watch the latest trailer again and see if you agree.

Also, 'Spectre Induction' incorporates a heroic reprise of the main theme, which sounds exactly like a commercial for the Marines. "Be your best. Climb the top. Bake a cake. The Marines..."
